Racism, Implicit Bias and Health Care Disparities

The presentation will discuss levels of racism in medicine, including systemic racism, interpersonally-mediated racism and internalized racism, with a focus on implicit bias and how that bias impacts medical decision making in a manner that contributes toward health care disparities.

Learning Objectives

Following participation in this course, participants should be able to:

  • Define levels of racism in medicine

  • Describe implicit bias (aka implicit attitudes or unconscious bias)

  • Identify exposures to what may be our own implicit biases

  • Summarize how implicit bias relates to medicine and health care disparities
